Canyon (cañón �a pipe, gorge�) � a deep river valley with very abrupt, quite often steep slopes and the narrow bottom usually completely occupied with a channel of the river. One of the largest canyons of the world � the Grand Canyon (English Grand Canyon) the rivers Colorados in the USA (length more than 320 km, depth to 1 800). Second-large in the world and the biggest in Europe is a canyon of the river Container in Montenegro (length of 82 km, depth to 1 300). The Sulaksky canyon formed by the river Sulak between ridges Gimrinsky and Salatau (Russia, Dagestan), reaches depths about 1 900 m and lengths about 53 km. The granite gorge has length of 4 km and depth about 200 m. From apart it is possible to see before itself three peaked rocks which have risen over gorge of the river White. They are called differently: �Three crosses�, �Three gendarmes�, or easier "Trident". These are tops of the Dahovsky granite file. "Trident" as though protects an input in gorge from the south. In 50 metres there is a bottleneck of the river where the width of a channel does not exceed 2 m. Virgin bukovo-grabovyj wood over a raging current of water, harmonous pines on red granite rocks, a dense underbrush from an azalea and other lianas twisting trees, at last, magnificent thickets of a fern in wood � all it smoothes sharp ledges of unapproachable rocks and gives to gorge a festively-solemn kind.
